What is Ho’oponopono?

Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice centered on forgiveness, reconciliation, and spiritual healing. In the Hawaiian language, ho’o means “to make” or “to bring about,” and pono signifies “rightness,” “balance,” or “goodness.” Together, the word reflects the idea of “making things right” or restoring harmony within oneself and in relationships.

Ho’oponopono was practiced as a group ritual to resolve conflicts within families and communities. The process involved prayer, open dialogue, confession, repentance, and mutual forgiveness. Participants were encouraged to acknowledge their actions, take responsibility, and release emotional burdens. The intention was to clear negativity and restore peace, allowing relationships to heal and move forward in unity.

Ho’oponopono is often practiced individually or within families as a form of meditation. It is commonly associated with a simple four-phrase mantra—“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”—though its philosophy extends far beyond these words. At its core lies the belief that we are responsible for our inner world and experiences, as everything is interconnected.
